When Calls the Heart is now going into its ninth season on Hallmark Channel. It is based on a series of books by Canadian author Janette Oke.
The show follows Elizabeth Thatcher, a privileged young woman from Hamilton, Ontario, who moves to a small mining town in western Canada to teach school.
Oke published her first book, Love Comes Softly, in 1979.
Since then she has published more than 70 standalone titles and nine series, including:
The Love Comes Softly Series
A Prairie Legacy Series
Seasons of the Heart Series
Canadian West Series
Return to the Canadian West Series
When Hope Calls Series
Song of Acadia Series
Acts of Faith Series
Janette Oke Animal Friends Series
When Calls the Heart, the first in the Canadian West series, was published in 1983. In 2013, it was adapted into a two-hour TV pilot starring actress Maggie Grace as Elizabeth Thatcher.
In 2014, the series debuted on Hallmark Channel. Produced by Michael Landon Jr., the show starred Erin Krakow as Elizabeth and actor Daniel Lissing as Jack Thornton, a Royal North-West Mounted Police constable assigned to keep an eye out for her.
Despite a rocky beginning, the two characters fell in love. They married during Season 5. Jack was killed shortly afterward, leaving Elizabeth to raise their son on her own.
In 2019, Hallmark created a spinoff of the show, When Hope Calls, based loosely on a series Oke co-authored with her daughter, Laurel Oke Logan.
