Countdown to Christmas proves a ratings boon for Crown Media
Hallmark launched its holiday programming offensive early this year, beginning Countdown to Christmas the weekend before Halloween with the premiere of four original movies.
The move paid off. Hallmark was the most-watched cable network for the weekend of October 22, according to Nielsen. Among women ages 8-54, it beat all four major networks for the 8-10 p.m. Saturday time slot.
Hallmark has remained in a strong position every weekend since, with more than 2 million viewers tuning it to watch its film premieres each weekend, according to Nielsen ratings.
Crown Media CEO weighs in
“I’m incredibly proud of our programming team for their hard work and dedication to portraying holiday moments that reflect unique storylines and backgrounds and are filled with positivity, warmth, and connection,” said Wonya Lucas, President & CEO, Crown Media Family Networks. “We look forward to sharing the joy of Hallmark holiday magic with our viewers all season long.”
This is the 13th year that Crown Media has featured Countdown to Christmas on Hallmark Channel. In addition to featuring 24-hour holiday programming, the network also debuts a slew of new movies — this year upward of 40. Hallmark Movies and Mysteries also piles on the Christmas love, with new movies premiering under its Miracles of Christmas banner.
Rooftop celebration
Network stars celebrated the annual event with a roof-top party sponsored by Crown Media, complete with live performances by Jordin Sparks, Train, and Forest Blakk.
Sparks posted a series of photos to Instagram with the caption, “Do you what I seeeee?!? Christmas is here, thanks to @hallmarkchannel! So excited to be a part of this amazing list of talent bringing amazing new holiday films to the network.”
