Ashley Williams and Paul Campbell star in new Hallmark movie about community, love, and the fight against Alzheimer’s

Ashley Williams and Paul Campbell headline the new Hallmark movie Falling Together, which will premiere on World Alzheimer’s Day.

The movie tells the story of a woman determined to give back to her community and make a difference in the fight against Alzheimer’s. Written by Adam Kulbersh, it was inspired by actress Ashley Williams’s real-life experiences.

Hallmark star Ashley Williams has been vocal about the toll Alzheimer’s disease has taken on her family. In 2016, her mother died after a lengthy battle with the disease. Williams wrote a piece for Medium about the experience and became active in fundraising efforts to support research and care for people living with Alzheimer’s.

In October 2024, Williams and fellow Hallmark star Nikki DeLoach — who lost her father to Pick’s disease — will co-host the seventh annual Dance Party to End ALZ, an event founded by Williams’s older sister, Kimberly Paisley-Williams. According to the event’s website, the dance parties have raised $2.1 million since their inception.

In an interview with Southern Living, Paisley-Williams called the fundraiser a celebration of life.

“Not only is dancing really good for your brain and your body, but it’s also a way to find community together in what also can be a really isolating disease,” she said.

Falling Together stars Ashley Williams as a woman who has just moved to a new city and is determined to get involved in her community. In addition to signing up to volunteer at the Walk to End Alzheimer’s fundraising event, she throws a party to meet her neighbors. When no one shows, she realizes she has her work cut out for her. She turns to her building’s apathetic superintendent, played by Paul Campbell, for help.

The story is based in part on a real-life experience Williams had.

“When I first moved to Manhattan a few years ago, I threw a ‘chili party’ in my apartment building to get  to know everyone and no one came,” she said in a statement through Hallmark. “Once I worked my way through the shame — and  the copious leftovers — I thought, ‘Maybe there’s a rom-com here!’ Turns out this was the perfect leaping off point to reunite with my dear friend Paul Campbell in a hilarious, warm, comedy amongst the autumn leaves.”

Clothing and accessories worn in the film will be for up for grabs through the resale company LuxAnthropy, with all proceeds being donated to the Alzheimer’s Association.

A Hallmark spokesman said the film is the perfect combination of entertainment and philanthropy.

“Putting care into the world is a basic tenet of the Hallmark brand, so when Ashley and Neal brought this idea to us we felt it was a perfect fit,” said Bart Fisher, vice president of programming at Hallmark Media. “This is an important cause that affects so many people, whether it’s the patient or a family member.  We’re happy to be able to help shine a light on it while also giving our viewers the kind of heartwarming story filled with romance that they know and love.”

  • Andrew Walker: There’s no comparing Hallmark and Great American Family

Andrew Walker: There’s no comparing Hallmark and Great American Family

Andrew Walker believes there’s no comparison between Hallmark Media and Great American Family.

“I don’t know how our style gets duplicated somewhere else in quite the same way,” he said in a recent interview. “It’s like comparing apples to oranges.”

Walker spoke with a reporter from Vulture alongside Paul Campbell and Tyler Hynes when the three stars visited Hallmark Media’s New York headquarters.

During the interview, the actors addressed everything from their reign as the Kings of Christmas to Candace Cameron Bure’s exit from Hallmark in 2022 to join Great American Family.

Paul Campbell also weighed in on Great American Family, saying there’s no competition between the new network and Hallmark.

“I think the word ‘competition’ implies there are viewers going elsewhere because somebody else is doing what Hallmark is doing,” Campbell said. “If you look at the numbers this season, viewership is up, so it’s a big playground. There’s a lot of space for people to produce and tell similar stories. But I don’t think there’s competition. Hallmark is the only place that does specifically what Hallmark does.”

The actors made it clear that there’s room for everyone on the broadcasting stage.

“The formula is pretty sound. I don’t think we need to sit here and go, ‘Oh, one network is better than the next,’” Walker said.

    Great American Family

Great American Family was launched by former Hallmark CEO Bill Abbott in 2021. Actress Candace Cameron Bure made headlines when she announced in April 2022 that she was leaving Hallmark to take up an executive position at the new network. She said that leadership changes had created a new atmosphere at Hallmark Media and that Great American Family’s ideals were more in line with her own.

“I’m very excited to develop heartwarming family and faith-filled programming and make the kind of stories my family and I love to watch,” she said in a statement through the network.

In his interview with Vulture, Walker made it clear he thought her move was motivated by something else.

“I think it was just a good excuse to cover up an opportunity she had somewhere else,” he said. “Whether she thought she had it less at Hallmark because she’s an executive now over at Great American Family, I don’t know. That’s the way I took it.”

Tyler Hynes weighed in with his opinion.

“I can’t imagine how complicated or nuanced her relationship was or wasn’t,” he said. “All I know is, for us, it’s very simple why we’re here. We know what we’re doing. I don’t want to speak for you guys, but I certainly know why I’m here.”

    Hallmark Media

The three actors also promoted an extended cut version of their 2022 Countdown to Christmas hit Three Wise Men and a Baby, which Hallmark recently made available on its streaming platform, Hallmark Movies Now.

In an Instagram post, Hynes thanked fans for their enthusiastic response to the movie, which was the most-watched cable film of last year.

“Seeing your stories and posts with all of the new scenes, lines and moments have been lovely. :),” he wrote. “It’s your passion for the film thats inspired this first for the network and certainly us. …Thanks to everyone who worked on bringing back more of the love, laughs and heart, making for an even more immersive experience. Lovely to see streaming allowing for creative opportunities like this. We know theres a blooper reel floating around… ;)”

  • Paul Campbell is a Christmas hater in new Hallmark movie Magic in Mistletoe

Paul Campbell is a Christmas hater in new Hallmark movie Magic in Mistletoe

Paul Campbell plays an author who has lost his love of Christmas in the new Hallmark movie Magic in Mistletoe. The film, which will premiere as part of Hallmark’s Countdown to Christmas programming event, also stars Lyndie Greenwood.

In an Instagram post promoting the movie, Campbell acknowledged that playing a Scrooge-like character was a departure for him.

“Hands down the LEAST likeable I’ve ever been off the top of a Hallmark movie (it came with surprising ease…),” he wrote in the caption. “@lyndiegreenwood was so fun to play off and absolutely knocked it out of the park. Beautifully directed by @thepaulaelle and produced with great care by @michaelrgold — can’t wait for you folks to see this one.”

    New Hallmark movie

In Magic in Mistletoe, Paul Campbell plays Harrington Davis, an artist who has become a commercial success thanks to his book series about the magic of Christmas. But after years of writing about the same topic, Harrington has become jaded. When he shares a post on social media claiming that Christmas is a scam, his fans turn on him.

His publisher puts PR genius April (Lyndie Greenwood) to work on the case. She convinces Harrington to travel to his hometown of Mistletoe, which inspired his books, and participate in the annual festival the town throws to honor his series. He is reluctant to go but agrees. As he and April spend time together at the town’s events and she meets his longtime friends, a different side to him emerges. April begins to understand what inspired him to create Magic in Mistletoe and why he has such bitter feelings about Christmas.

According to a synopsis from Hallmark, “The initial frost between them starts to thaw and there just may be a path leading to a merry Christmas for all.”

Campbell began writing screenplays shortly after the birth of his son. He wrote the 2017 Hallmark movie Sun, Sand & Romance, which he starred in with his former Battlestar Galactica castmate Tricia Helfer. He went on to write Christmas by Starlight, which he also starred in, as well as An Unexpected Christmas (2021), Christmas at Castle Hart (2021), and Three Wise Men and a Baby (2022).

In an interview, Campbell said he is grateful to be working for Hallmark Media.

“Hallmark Channel is the perfect place for me to be working right now,” he said. “I really like the content, and now that I have a family, it’s a nice sort of pleasant content where I don’t have to worry about racy, questionable stuff. It’s definitely the direction that I feel I’m headed. I’m always open to doing movies or series with Hallmark, whatever they have for me. I would always jump at the chance.”

  • Movie star. Screenwriter. Podcast host. Carpenter? Seven fascinating things you need to know about Hallmark legend Paul Campbell

Movie star. Screenwriter. Podcast host. Carpenter? Seven fascinating things you need to know about Hallmark legend Paul Campbell

Paul Campbell has been entertaining Hallmark audiences for years, starring in more than a dozen movies for the network. In 2022 he headlined Dating the Delaneys with Rachel Boston and Three Wise Men and a Baby with Andrew Walker and Tyler Hynes.

But the Canadian actor is more than just a handsome face. Here are some fascinating facts about the star:

    1. He trained to be a carpenter.

In a 2018 interview on My Devotional Thoughts, Campbell said he always thought he would work as a carpenter.

“Through my entire adolescence and throughout high school, I was planning to build houses,” he said. “I just loved the idea of building houses, and I honestly, I didn’t consider any other profession.”

But after graduating from high school and working as a professional for four years, Campbell changed his mind. He said he remembered thinking, “This isn’t the job that I thought it was.”

He ended up taking an acting class and quickly fell in love. While attending theater school, he was spotted by an agent who signed him after graduation. In 2004, he booked the role of Billy Keikeya on the re-boot of Battlestar Galactica. He went on to have roles in The Dead Zone, John Doe, Black Sash, Andromeda, Scrubs, and Knight Rider.

He booked his first Hallmark movie, Window Wonderland, in 2013. The rest, as they say, is history.

    2. Before he joined the network, he had never seen a Hallmark movie.

Campbell, who grew up in White Rock, British Columbia, said he didn’t know much about Hallmark before he began working for the network.

“I had an awareness of what the Hallmark network was,” he said. “Even before I started working with them, they had set up shop in Vancouver and were producing a fair amount of films. But I didn’t really get a sense of the volume they were producing or the tone, quality, and style until I actually did Window Wonderland.”

    3. He is now a ride-or-die Hallmark fan

Window Wonderland premiered in 2013. Campbell followed up with the Hallmark movies Surprised By Love in 2014 and Once Upon A Holiday in 2015.

“Once I got a sense of what Hallmark was all about, I was hooked,” he said. “I wanted to do more and more and more.”

He said he especially loves the content now that he is a father.

    4. He is a skilled screenwriter.

Campbell decided to try his hand at screenwriting after the birth of his son, Kingston. He had taken some time off from acting and ended up pitching an idea to Hallmark about a romantic comedy set on a beach. His idea was made into the 2017 movie Sun, Sand & Romance, which he starred in with his former Battlestar Galactica castmate Tricia Helfer.

He went on to write Christmas by Starlight, which he also starred in, as well as An Unexpected Christmas, which starred Bethany Joy Lenz and Tyler Hynes, and Christmas at Castle Hart, which starred Lacey Chabert and Stuart Townsend.

    5. He co-wrote the Countdown to Christmas hit Three Wise Men and a Baby

Campbell and his Christmas by Starlight co-star Kimberley Sustad had been writing together for years when Hallmark approached them with the idea for Three Wise Men and a Baby.

“They kind of planted the seed and then [Kimberley] and I grew the tree,” he said in an interview with Media Village.

Three Wise Men and a Baby, which premiered during Hallmark’s 2022 Countdown to Christmas event, went on to become the most-watched cable movie of the year.

Hallmark's Countdown to Christmas has pushed the network to the top of the ratings for eight straight weeks.

    6. He has been happily married since 2009.

Campbell and Lori Metz, a divorce and life coach, eloped in Vancouver in 2009. They followed the private affair with a celebration in Palm Springs two years later with friends and family.

In an Instagram post, Campbell shared photos from his wedding day including a snap of the two on a tandem bike.

“I’ll ride that two-seater with ya anywhere the durned wind takes us,” he wrote in the caption. “I love you.”

    7. He had a podcast called Two Pauls in a Podcast. It was awesome.

Paul Greene was Campbell’s first guest on the series. (Episodes are still on his website.) During the show, the pair revealed their unlikely connection. It turned out Lori once dated a man who is not only best friends with Greene but is his son Oliver’s godfather. Lori even attended Greene’s first wedding.
