Boston stars as Helen, a woman who has just dropped her daughter off for her first year at college. When she and her husband arrive home, she finds out he wants a separation.
At first, Helen is beside herself. But when an adorable stray dog turns up on her doorstep, Helen reluctantly takes him in and dubs him Elmer because he sticks to her like glue.
She takes Elmer to a veterinarian (played by Warren Christie), who helps Helen navigate first-time dog ownership.
