Kavan Smith developed a love of performing as a teenager. Though he enrolled in the University of Calgary to study economics, he dropped out after a year and a half. Eventually, he entered the performing arts program at Mount Royal University.

Smith went on to have roles in Sanctuary, Supernatural, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Twilight Zone, Smallville, Battlestar Galactica, and The 4400.

In 2000 he landed a role in the Brian De Palma movie Mission to Mars, working alongside Gary Sinise, Tim Robbins, Don Cheadle, and Connie Nielsen.

When Calls the Heart

Though Smith has worked with his fellow When Calls the Heart star Pascale Hutton in several movies, he admitted in an interview that they didn’t get off to the best start.

“We shot a scene one day and she kept trying to shove a spoon full of food into my mouth,” Kavan said during an appearance on Home and Family.

“[It] was not written in the script—I just thought it would be funny,” Pascale said.

“It was annoying at first,” Smith said. “I was like ‘I’m not going to like this actor,’ but after about the sixteenth time I was like, ‘This is pretty funny.’ And then from that point on it become a contest of who could out-humor the other.”
