How Hallmark launched one of the most popular Halloween movie franchises in the world
Hallmark may be well known for its Christmas movies but the company has also has one of the most popular Halloween movie franchises on TV. In 2008 the company released a movie called The Good Witch. Starring British actress Catherine Bell, the film told the story of a mysterious woman who moved to a small town to live in an old mansion that locals believed was haunted.
Though the townspeople were wary of the newcomer at first, eventually her kindness and generosity won them over. The movie was so popular with fans that the network made 12 in the series and even launched a TV show based on the characters.
Halloween movie
Rod Spence is the creator of the Good Witch characters. In an interview on the Keep Heartland Strong YouTube channel, he talked about how he came to work for Hallmark.
In 2004, he was trying to sell action-movie screenplays when his agent suggested he take a phone meeting with a Hallmark executive. She told Spence that the network liked to do holiday-themed movies but that they always struggled with Halloween.
“I said, ‘Well let me take a shot at that, let me see what I can come up with,’” Spence said. “So I hung up the phone and an amazing thing happened. Within 45 minutes I had the I had the basic idea for The Good Witch.”
Though he finished the script that year, it took another three years before Hallmark brought it to life on the small screen.
“I kind of think this was divine timing that it just laid there for three years until Catherine Bell came along,” he said. “She was absolutely Cassie Nightingale from day one.”
Spence said he believes the character of Cassie Nightingale was responsible for much of the franchise’s popularity.
“The key to Cassie’s character for me, and what made her so unique and successful is very simple: She’s a woman that no matter who comes to her or what situation comes to her she always responds with unconditional love,” Spence said. “That’s the whole key and that’s what makes her so unique. And you can do so much with that.”
The TV series
The films proved so popular that in 2015 Hallmark launched a TV series based on the characters. The show ran for seven seasons until Hallmark abruptly cancelled it in 2021. Goodies have been trying to get the show back on the air ever since.
Though Spence doesn’t believe the series will come back, he said it’s likely that Hallmark will make a movie featuring Cassie Nightingale and her family, he said. Spence even volunteered to write the script.
“If Hallmark needs a writer for the next Good Witch movie, give me a call!” he said. “I would certainly love to do that.”

When Calls the Heart fans divided over Season 10
When Calls the Heart fans took to social media to share their opinions on Season 10 after Sunday night’s finale ended on an emotional cliffhanger.
Some were thrilled with the developments, including Lucas and Elizabeth breaking off their engagement and Henry becoming a godfather. Others were furious.
“Absolutely the worst season ever!” wrote one Heartie on the show’s Facebook page. “Watched since day one. Absolutely loved it all for it to be destroyed by a writer who knows nothing about the show!”
When Calls the Heart
Most Hearties were sounding off on Lucas and Elizabeth calling it quits. The trouble began when Lucas announced he wanted to run for governor. This would have meant a move for Elizabeth and Jack Junior away from Hope Valley. In a scene fraught with tension, Nathan let Elizabeth know he thought a move was a bad idea.
Soon after, Elizabeth told Lucas she wanted to stay in Hope Valley.
“This is where I want to raise my son,” she admitted. “This is where I want to be.”
He offered to stay but Elizabeth pulled a Humphrey-Bogart-in-Casablanca move by saying, “If you don’t get on that train, we both know you’ll regret it. You’re bound for a bigger stage, and I think you know that in your heart.”
He said, “I just hoped so much that I was wrong, and I was afraid to bring it up. But maybe these paths were meant to be.”
Lucas vs Nathan
Between Lucas leaving and Nathan offering Elizabeth unsolicited advice, it became clear that the love triangle developed in earlier seasons was far from resolved. Though some fans were thrilled that she would not end up with Lucas, others felt led on by the writers, accusing them of putting in plot twists to increase ratings.
“Ratings are obviously what you truly care about well good luck with that!” wrote a fan on Facebook. “You destroyed a very lovable peaceful escape to many of us. I’ll just stick with it all Ended at the end of season 9. Do better.”
Others disagreed.
“Thank you for bringing back the Hope Valley I fell in love with!!” wrote another. “This is the show that I poured my heart and soul into. It lost its way for a bit, but it found its path again!!”
Some fans made it clear that the show will never be the same without Jack (Daniel Lissing), Elizabeth’s first husband.
“I’ve been re-watching season one and neither Lucas or Nathan show the excitement and passion that Jack shared with Elizabeth,” wrote one Heartie. His personality and love were one of a kind. Perhaps the writers can just leave her single until that special person comes to town. In my opinion, it’s neither men.”
Other developments
Some Hearties sounded off on Henry Gowen, who seemed to be having a redemptive story arc this season. Many were thrilled when he agreed to be the godfather of Lee and Rosemary Coulter’s baby, Goldie.
Still others were excited to see what might come next for Mike Hickam and Mei Suo, who had a budding romance this season.
Cast and crew are already hard at work on Season 11 of the series. Hallmark has not yet given a release date for the next season.

And this could actually be yours if you make a donation of five dollars or more to the MLSE Foundation and in the comments section you write, ‘Jersey,’ you will be entered into a raffle to win my jersey. I’ll write a little note on it just for you and you can take it and, you know, do whatever you want with it.”

To quote my aunt, an avid Hallmark movie viewer, ‘There’s no nasty language and people are just nice.’ It’s hard to be inundated daily with the tragedies of the world. These films are a reminder that not everything has to be so dark. These movies fill you with cheer and immediately make you feel cozy.”

Nikki DeLoach played Brenda Long on Days of Our Lives from 2007-2009. She also had roles on Walker, Texas Ranger, CSI: NY, Cold Case, NCIS, Mad Men, Criminal Minds, and Grey’s Anatomy. She has starred in the Hallmark movies The Gift of Peace, Taking the Reins, Cranberry Christmas, and Love Takes Flight.
Walker has appeared on the TV shows Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Reba, The Big Bang Theory, CSI: Miami, CSI: NY, ER, and When Calls the Heart. He has starred in the Hallmark movies A Bride For Christmas, Debbie Macomber’s Dashing Through the Snow, Merry & Bright, Sweet Autumn, Christmas Tree Lane, My Christmas Family Tree, A Maple Valley Christmas, and Three Wise Men and a Baby.
Dream duo
In a Facebook Live event to promote Curious Caterer: Grilling Season, Walker and DeLoach joked about how often they have been paired up in Hallmark movies. Walker even referred to himself as DeLoach’s ‘work husband.’
He asked fans to continue their support for the new mystery series so he could work exclusively with DeLoach.

Morgan Kohan shares sad news about When Hope Calls
Actress Morgan Kohan shared the sad news that the TV series When Hope Calls is unlikely to come back for a second season.
“It’s a show that keeps popping by to say, ‘Hi,’ but you never know,” she told Hello magazine. “I think it’s a really beautiful world and I’m so happy for my time in it. I think maybe, at a point, I would [return to the show] but I’m really excited with where my career is taking me now.”
Sullivan’s Crossing
Kohan has been promoting her new series, Sullivan’s Crossing. Based on a series of books by Robyn Carr — the same author behind Virgin River — the Canadian show premiered on the CW network on October 4.
In the series, Kohan plays Maggie Sullivan, a neurosurgeon whose life is turned upside down when she finds herself unexpectedly at the center of legal troubles. She leaves behind her career in Boston and returns to Sullivan’s Crossing, a campground nestled in her hometown in Nova Scotia.
She tries to reconcile with her estranged father, Sully, (played by Scott Patterson of Gilmore Girls). She also meets Cal Jones (played by Chad Michael Murray), who makes her start to doubt her relationship with her boyfriend (played by Allan Hawco).
In the interview, Kohan touched on how the show shares traits with the Hallmark series When Calls the Heart.
“There’s nothing too crazy or dark here,” she said. “You’re going to leave that hour feeling good and a lot of the time, for me anyway, it makes me want to call my own family and my friends, and bring my community closer together which I think is a beautiful thing. Sullivan’s Crossing, Virgin River, When Calls The Heart – all of them are about tight-knit communities where everybody is in it together.”

When Hope Calls
Kohan starred in When Hope Calls, a spinoff of Hallmark’s hit series When Calls the Heart. She played Lilian Walsh, who was adopted as a child and separated from her sister, Grace (played by Jocelyn Hudon).
After searching for years, Lilian finds Grace and the two start an orphanage in the small community of Brookfield. The show aired for one season on Hallmark in 2019. Great American Family, the network founded by former Hallmark CEO Bill Abbott, created a two-episode Christmas special that aired in 2021.
In When Hope Calls: A Country Christmas, the folks of Brookfield entered a magazine competition for the No.1 Country Christmas Town. Both Lori Loughlin and Daniel Lissing reprised their roles as Abigail Stanton and Jack Thornton from When Calls the Heart in the Christmas series.
Fans were hoping to see more of the show but neither Hallmark nor Great American Family have indicated they will pick it up for another season.
Morgan Kohan
A native of British Columbia, Morgan went to college to study dancing and found herself required to take acting class. She eventually fell in love with acting and switched.
“I would have these moments of weird blackouts, of being so present in those classes and there was something so magical about that,” she said.
She appeared on the TV shows Murdoch Mysteries, Kim’s Convenience, Star Trek: Discovery, and Ransom. In addition to appearing in When Calls the Heart and When Hope Calls, Kohan starred in the Hallmark movie Love on Harbor Island (2020).
The cast of Sullivan’s Crossing recently finished filming Season 2 of the series.
All 10 episodes of Season 1 will air on the CW throughout October and November on Wednesdays at 8/7c.
The series can also be streamed on Hulu + Live TV, YouTube TV, Sling TV, and FuboTV.

When Calls the Heart creator talks about final season
When Calls the Heart co-creator Brian Bird recently told fans when they can expect a final season of the hit Hallmark series. The good news is that it’s not anytime soon.
“… We’re going to try to catch up with The Simpsons, which is in season 42 or something like that,” he said during the 2023 Hearties Family Reunion.
When Calls the Heart
Bird addressed fans at the three-day event on the set of the hit Hallmark series, telling them they were the reason the show was still going.
“As I’ve said many times over the last decade, you Hearties are the reason for the show,” he said. “I think one of the big reasons that the show is still going strong is all of you.”
When Calls the Heart debuted on Hallmark Channel in 2014. The show, which is based on a series of books by Canadian Janette Oke, follows a wealthy young woman who moves to a coal mining town to work as a teacher at the turn of the 20th century.
The show avoids profanity and limits violence, focusing instead on religious faith and the day-to-day life of a small community.
Actress Erin Krakow, who has starred on the show since the first season and is also an executive producer, has talked about how unique the series is.
“I cannot say enough how grateful I am,” she said during an interview with Southern Living. “There’s an element of risk and chance that comes with taking the leap of being an actor and making that one’s career. And it doesn’t often come with, let’s call it job security. It has been really nice to have this really good job for the past decade. And in addition to getting to play a part that I really care about. I get to work with people on set and off who I really care about. It is such a positive workplace full of people who have become some of my best friends and that’s just on set. But working with our writers, executives at the network, they’re all incredible people who have become dear friends as well. It’s just a really good, positive team, and very collaborative.”
Hearties Family Reunion
The Hearties Family Reunion takes place every fall on the When Calls the Heart set. Fans are able to visit the buildings featured on the show, get a close-up look at costumes, and meet the stars.
As one of the speakers at this year’s event, Brin Bird talked about the longevity of the show, which he co-created with Michael Landon Jr.
“The network orders a certain number of episodes,” he said. “We, the production company, produce those episodes for the network. So, it’s really not up to us how many. There’s also something to be said for the anticipation. You know, you love the show so much. You can’t wait till it returns and so there’s this incredible anticipation while that’s happening.”
Though Bird implied it is up to Hallmark Media, in previous interviews he has told fans that the series can continue even if the company drops it from its lineup.
“Whether or not the Hallmark Channel wants to keep us around forever doesn’t matter,” he said in an appearance on the When Calls the Heart After Show. “There will be somebody else who wants it because it is so unique. And we will keep making the show as long as those Hearties want to show up and watch the show.”

A ghost plays matchmaker in new Hallmark movie
In the new Hallmark movie 3 Bed, 2 Bath, 1 Ghost, the lively spirit of a 1920s flapper refuses to leave her home until she helps the woman who is selling it find love.
Madeleine Arthur stars as Ruby, who has haunted her former home for decades, only to befriend Anna (played by Julie Gonzalo), who is trying to close her first deal as a Realtor.
But playing matchmaker turns tricky when Ruby decides that Anna is destined to be with Elliot (Chris McNally), the ex Anna left at the altar.
“Will old feelings resurface when Anna @julie_gonzalo teams up with her ex-fiancé Elliot @chrismcnally to restore a haunted mansion?” reads an Instagram post promoting the movie.
Real-life couple
In addition to featuring a fun plot twist, 3 Beds, 2 Bath, 1 Ghost also stars real-life couple Julie Gonzalo and Chris McNally.
The pair met while filming the 2018 Hallmark movie, The Sweetest Heart. In June 2022, they welcome a baby girl.
McNally has called fatherhood his favorite job. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, he credited his work with Hallmark for helping him be present in his daughter’s life.
“…I’ve got a wonderful dad job because for When Calls the Heart we film four and a half months, the hours are not crazy, we don’t really have a lot of night shoots so I can be really present with her,” he said. “And then I get the rest of the year, which is like, it’s just such a blessing. So, since wrapping in mid-November I’ve just been on dad mode and it’s fantastic.”
Julie Gonzalo
Julie Gonzalo was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and moved with her family to Miami when she was eight years old.
Her first big role was the 2002 romantic comedy I’m with Lucy. She had roles in the TV shows Veronica Mars, CSI: Miami, Dallas, and Castle.
She has appeared in the Hallmark movies Falling For Vermont (2017), The Sweetest Heart (2018), Flip That Romance (2019), Jingle Bell Bride (2020), and Cut, Color, Murder (2022).
Chris McNally
Chris McNally plays Lucas Bouchard on the hit Hallmark series When Calls the Heart. He has appeared in the TV shows Riverdale, Firefly Lane, Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies, Killer Instinct, Tower Prep, Supernatural, Falling Skies, and Lucifer.
He has starred in the Hallmark movies Hearts of Christmas (2016), The Gourmet Detective (2017), Rocky Mountain Christmas (2017), The Sweetest Heart (2018), A Winter Princess (2019), Sailing Into Summer (2019), Snowkissed (2021), A Tail of Love (2022), Christmas Class Reunion (2022), and Fourth Down and Love (2023).
Madeleine Arthur
Madeleine Arthur has appeared on the TV series The X Files, Supernatural, The Family, and The Magicians.
In 2014, she played the daughter of Amy Adams in the award-winning Tim Burton movie Big Eyes. In a 2019 interview, Arthur said she wasn’t always interested in acting.
“Growing up I was more focused on academics, as well as extracurriculars such as gymnastics and violin,” she said. “For the longest time I thought I wanted to somehow work at the UN. Then at the age of 12 I read a book on theatre and had an epiphany. I knew at that moment I wanted to be an actor and began realizing my dreams by taking as many acting classes as I could.”

New Hannah Swensen mystery features awkward reunion between exes
The new Hannah Swensen mystery A Zest for Death features an awkward reunion between Hannah and Mike. The couple, who broke off their engagement in the last Hannah Swensen movie, come face-to-face when they are — surprise! — investigating the same murder.
“Hannah’s connection with Mike may be on a rough road, but a new mystery is just around the corner,” reads a promo on the Hallmark Movies and Mysteries fan page.
New Hannah Swensen
In A Zest for Death, Hannah’s mother (played by Barbara Niven) is house hunting with Hannah’s sister when they discover a dead body. The victim was a regular customer at Hannah’s business, The Cookie Jar, so naturally Hannah gets involved in solving the murder.
This time she gets help from her mother and her two sisters (played by Tess Atkins and Lisa Durupt). There is an awkward reunion with Mike with Hannah becomes convinced his prime suspect is innocent.
“There’s nothing like a murder to bring two people back together,” says the narrator in a preview.
Hannah and Mike
Fans were left reeling after Hannah and Mike broke up in Carrot Cake Murder: A Hannah Swensen Mystery.
In a May interview, Sweeney talked about some of the challenges the couple faced.
“Mike is attracted to Hannah and her crime solving ways, her mind, the fact that she is so interested, the fact that she’s good at it,” she told TV Insider. “She does get people to talk to her in a way that sometimes Mike or other detectives aren’t able to get them to open up. She does have really good instincts and a unique way of getting people to open up to her. I think the cookies help. Mike respects that, and he loves that about her, but it causes him a lot of trouble at work, and for good reasons and maybe also not so good reasons, the sheriff isn’t too keen to have Hannah getting involved in the crime solving business. So that’s been a tricky thing for [Mike] to navigate. And unfortunately, I think Mike is a little old school, so he struggles with how much of that to share with Hannah.”
Fans have made it clear they would like to see Hannah and Mike get back together, but so far Hallmark hasn’t offered any clues as to whether they will reunite.
A Zest for Death: A Hannah Swensen Mystery will premiere on Hallmark Movies and Mysteries on Friday, October 6 at 9/8c.
